Coffee vs tea vs matcha: which has more caffeine?
Coffee usually contains more caffeine per serving than tea, but serving size, dose and brewing can change the answer. Compare like with like to understand what you drink.

1. Typical amounts at a glance
FDA reference values for 12 fl oz drinks put regular brewed coffee around 113–247 mg, black tea around 71 mg and green tea around 37 mg. These are category estimates, not guarantees for every shop or brew.
Matcha has no single universal value. Because the powdered leaf is consumed, caffeine depends strongly on the grams of powder, cultivar and preparation. Compare the actual powder dose, not only cup size.
Coffee generally sits highest, black tea in the middle and green tea lower. Matcha varies with powder dose. Decaf is not caffeine-free: the FDA gives about 2–15 mg for an 8 fl oz cup.
2. Why can the same drink vary so much?
- Ingredients: bean species, tea cultivar and leaf position matter.
- Dose: more coffee, leaves or matcha powder usually means more caffeine.
- Extraction: temperature, contact time, grind and brewing method change yield.
- Serving size: espresso is concentrated, but a full serving may contain less than a large filter coffee.
- Recipe: milk does not remove caffeine; espresso shot count determines a latte’s total.
3. Why matcha is not simply green tea
Green tea infuses leaves and removes them. Matcha suspends finely ground leaf in water, so a generic green-tea value cannot be applied to every matcha drink.
Café matcha lattes may use premixes with different powder ratios and scoop counts. Prefer brand data; otherwise estimate from the product and label it clearly as an estimate.
4. Choose a drink for your needs
- For a stronger lift, compare total milligrams—not just drink names.
- To reduce afternoon intake, choose a smaller serving, fewer shots, shorter tea steep or decaf.
- If sensitive, include tea, chocolate, cola, energy drinks and medicines in the daily total.
- The FDA cites 400 mg per day for most adults as an amount not generally associated with negative effects, but individual needs vary.
